Being CPA Literate – Why It Matters
How many of us have been in this situation: A piece of very delicate equipment has gone wrong and we need to call an expert in to fix it. After casting a glance over the piece of machinery we have almost given up for dead they say “oh yes, I can fix this – you see, the problem is that the…”. They then launch into a technical explanation of exactly why the equipment is not working using plenty of jargon which leaves you entirely mystified, and you nod along making agreeable noises, until they come to the crux of the problem and ask “You know what I mean?”. You nod, you say yes. You don’t know.
In large part, this exact style of one-sided conversation is why we are liable to end up spending more money getting equipment fixed if the person on the other end of the transaction is willing to exploit our ignorance. The only way to be sure that you are doing the right thing in any kind of transaction is to know your subject – and if it has jargon attached, even if you really hate jargon, then you’d better at least be familiar with the meanings of the words and abbreviations that are used by most people in the industry. CPA is no different.
It is worth learning the meaning of jargon expressions before you look to launch a CPA strategy. You don’t have to use it yourself – it must be quite refreshing for people who spend the day reading network applications to read something in plain English – but other people will use it, and if you don’t understand them you can miss out on good deals. Therefore, it helps to study up a little on the jargon and what it means.
