SEO? KEI! OMG…

Most people, when they first encounter the idea of SEO keywords, nod at the idea and think “that makes sense”. Then they stop and think for a moment and begin to wonder – if you pick bad keywords, then you won’t rank high on the search engines. But then, if you pick good keywords, they’ll be the same ones everyone else uses, and you’ll have to battle them for search engine supremacy. What do you do then? The truth is that you are looking for keywords with enough originality to allow you a fair shot at the first page of Google, while not being so obscure that no-one will search for them.

This is where KEI comes in useful. If you have recently been introduced to SEO, you will no doubt be overjoyed that another three-letter abbreviation is being thrown into the pot, and will probably have another few abbreviations in mind which are not particularly polite. However, this one could help you a lot. KEI is short for Keyword Effectiveness Indicator (or Index) and it tracks how effective certain keywords will be for finding the front page of a Google search. There are various software packages which allow you to track KEI, and if you use them intelligently you can get some powerful results.

Bear in mind, of course, that KEI is by its nature quite changeable. This means that you cannot find keywords with a great KEI and put them into your content before sitting back to watch the visitor numbers growing. You will have to update your content to stay relevant. If you can combine good content and good KEI (and SEO) effectively, then you can really benefit.
