The Political Imperative To Save Rainforests
Two of the strongest controlling forces in our world are the forces of finance and politics. Of course, these elements often work hand in hand. When trying to secure the environmental future of our planet, it is important to consider that the environment is largely in the hands of politics and finance. There has recently been a global recession which has still not done all of the damage it is going to. Recession begets financially expedient moves, so will this cause governments to let their environmental concerns slide?
The concerns of the environmental movement are obvious. When finance wields so much muscle, how can green concerns compete? The answer is in the importance of keeping in mind that a damaged environment is bad for business. While a government or the businesses operating under that government may feel that making an environmentally damaging decision is the only way of securing their immediate financial future, the risks of selling off their resources become clear when we look to the future.
It is hard to see a time when the green movement will have more muscle than the business world, so the important move is to convince the business world to think with a more green consciousness – to see the benefits of sustainability and environmental friendliness. This is a battle that can be won, but one which has a long way still to go. Environmental groups have a part to play in this, by raising the importance of green issues wherever there are big financial decisions to be made.
