Multiplayer Internet Games – A Major Industry
The chances are that you have spent a small or large amount of time in an internet café or two over recent years and, if you have, you will probably have noticed some very animated people reacting with shock, anger or glee at the events unfolding before them on the computer monitors. This is, in all likelihood, because they are playing a multi-player internet game which involves team strategy and competition between real-life players. An industry dedicated to these games has grown beyond what must have been imagined some time ago.
The wonder of these games is that they allow gamers to interact with one another and with the game world and each experience the game somewhat differently. Because of the connectivity in the game world, you can be – for example – shooting at a group of enemy soldiers and in need of back-up. You call for someone to help, and they will make their way to where you are in the game and provide a second shooter, or a hail of covering fire so that you can do what you need to do.
The way that multi-player games have developed over the years is quite fascinating. It has led to a whole new element of strategy which would have been impossible about a decade ago. Quite often, the games make use of VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) so that players can talk among themselves and react in real time to game events. It is a far cry from sitting and waiting to take your turn while a fellow player tried to complete the game themselves.
